Why January Is the Right Time to Address Rodents in Your Bay Area Home

January might seem like an odd time to think about rodent control. The holidays are over, the yard work is minimal, and pests feel like a spring and fall problem. But for rodents in the Bay Area, winter is actually one of the most important times to take action.

Why Rodents Are Active in Bay Area Winters

The Bay Area’s mild winters mean rodents never go dormant. Unlike regions with hard freezes, Bay Area rats and mice remain active and reproductive year-round. In fact, rodents that moved indoors in fall — seeking warmth as temperatures dropped — are now well established, foraging nightly, and in many cases breeding inside your structure.

The Compounding Problem

Every week a rodent infestation goes unaddressed is another week of: chewed wires and insulation, contaminated food storage areas, droppings accumulating in wall voids and attics, and new offspring being born. House mice can produce a new litter every three weeks. A small problem in October can be a significant infestation by January if left untreated.

January Is a Good Time to Inspect

With winter rains and cooler weather, this is actually a great time for a professional rodent inspection. Activity signs are often more visible in winter — fresh droppings, active runways, and evidence of recent gnawing. Entry points are easier to assess when ivy and other landscaping is dormant.

Starting Fresh for the New Year

Many homeowners use January as a time to reset and address problems they’ve been putting off. A rodent inspection and exclusion program is a worthwhile investment at the start of the year — eliminating a problem that’s been building since fall and putting prevention measures in place before spring. Contact ATCO for a January inspection.
