Shoo Fly, Don’t Bother Me — Bay Area Fly Control Guide

Flies aren’t just annoying — they’re a genuine sanitation concern. A single house fly can carry over 100 different pathogens and land on your food, counters, and eating surfaces dozens of times. In the Bay Area’s warm months, fly populations can build quickly when conditions are right.

Common Bay Area Fly Species

House flies (Musca domestica) are the most common indoor nuisance fly. They breed in decaying organic matter — garbage, compost, pet waste, and moist soil. They’re attracted to food and can contaminate surfaces through landing and regurgitation.

Fruit flies (Drosophila spp.) are small flies attracted to fermenting materials — overripe fruit, recycling bins, drain residue, and spilled alcohol. They breed rapidly and a small infestation can become large within days.

Drain flies breed in the organic film that builds up inside drains and pipes. They appear near sinks, floor drains, and mop closets. Cleaning the organic buildup inside the drain is the key to elimination.

What Actually Controls Flies

Effective fly control starts with eliminating breeding sources, not spraying adults.

  • Keep garbage cans tightly covered and emptied regularly
  • Clean recycling containers thoroughly — residue attracts fruit flies
  • Fix leaky pipes and eliminate standing moisture under sinks
  • Clean floor drains with a biological drain cleaner to remove organic buildup
  • Seal gaps around doors and windows to reduce entry
  • Store fruit in the refrigerator during warm months

If fly activity persists despite sanitation improvements, ATCO can help identify breeding sources and apply targeted treatments. Contact us for an assessment.
