Rats in the Pantry? Here’s What You Really Need to Know

You’re standing in the kitchen, maybe late at night, grabbing a snack — and you hear it. A faint scuffle. A scratch. You freeze. If you’ve ever opened your pantry and found gnawed cereal boxes, mysterious droppings, or that unsettling musky smell, there’s a good chance you’re not alone in your home.

The Bay Area Rodent Reality

Rodent issues in the Bay Area have intensified in recent years. Warmer winters, construction displacing established populations, and tighter urban housing density mean rats and mice are being squeezed into new territories — which often means your attic, crawlspace, or pantry.

These are not just gross freeloading roommates. Rats can chew through wires (a known cause of house fires), damage insulation, and carry diseases like leptospirosis and salmonella. If you see one rat, there are almost certainly more.

How to Know If You Have Rodents

  • Droppings — Small, dark pellets near food, under sinks, or along baseboards
  • Gnaw marks — Chewed packaging, wiring, or wooden surfaces
  • Grease trails — Oily marks along walls where rodents travel repeatedly
  • Sounds at night — Scratching in walls or ceilings
  • Musky odor — Especially in enclosed spaces like attics, garages, or crawlspaces

What Not to Do

Don’t rely solely on poison bait stations placed inside your home. Rodenticide-poisoned rodents often die inside walls or in inaccessible areas, creating odor problems and attracting secondary pests. And they do nothing to stop new rodents from entering through the same pathways.

What Actually Works

Effective rodent control requires three components: exclusion (sealing entry points), trapping (removing the existing population), and habitat modification (eliminating food sources and harborage). ATCO’s rodent program addresses all three. Contact us — same-week service available throughout the Bay Area.
