Ant Awareness Week: Understanding the Ants Taking Over Bay Area Homes

Ant Awareness Week is a fitting time to address one of the most persistent pest challenges Bay Area homeowners face. Ants may seem like a minor inconvenience, but recurring ant activity — the kind that doesn’t respond to repeated DIY treatments — is a sign that something more systematic is needed.

The Two Most Common Bay Area Ant Species

Argentine ants (Linepithema humile) are an invasive species that has become dominant throughout California. They form enormous supercolonies with thousands of queens and can invade homes in massive numbers when outdoor conditions become unfavorable. They do not respond well to spray treatments, which fracture colonies and spread activity rather than eliminating it.

Odorous house ants (Tapinoma sessile) are native and similarly difficult to control with DIY methods. Like Argentine ants, they form multi-queen colonies with numerous satellite nests. Crushed, they release a distinctive rotten coconut odor. They are opportunistic foragers that readily establish indoor trails.

Why DIY Ant Treatments Often Fail

Most over-the-counter ant sprays and traps address foraging workers — the ants you see — but not the colony. With multi-queen species like Argentine and odorous house ants, eliminating workers doesn’t solve the problem. The colony simply produces more workers and, if disrupted, may bud — splitting into multiple smaller colonies spread across a larger area.

What Works: Professional Gel Baiting

Professional gel bait formulations allow foraging workers to carry active ingredient back to the colony — including the queens. Applied in the right locations, in the right quantities, this approach eliminates the source of the infestation rather than just the visible ants. Combined with exterior habitat modification and identifying moisture sources, professional baiting provides durable results.

ATCO’s ant control program is designed around these principles. Contact us if you’re dealing with persistent ant activity in your Bay Area home.
