If you live in the Bay Area long enough, you’ll cross paths with ants in the kitchen, mice in the garage, or something bigger scurrying through the attic. The old answer was simple: call someone to spray and hope for the best. The smarter answer is Integrated Pest Management — IPM.
What Is IPM?
Integrated Pest Management is a systematic approach to pest control that prioritizes understanding and prevention over simply applying pesticides. It’s the approach endorsed by the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) IPM program and increasingly adopted by pest management professionals across California.
IPM is not one tool — it’s a whole toolbox: inspecting thoroughly, sealing gaps, setting targeted traps and bait, monitoring for results, and giving you honest advice to help keep pests out long-term.
The Four Pillars of IPM
1. Identify First — Before any treatment, identify exactly what pest species is present. Treatment strategy is species-specific. Treating for the wrong pest wastes time and money.
2. Understand the Source — Pests come because something is attracting them: food, water, shelter, or entry points. IPM addresses the source, not just the symptom.
3. Use Chemicals as a Last Resort — When other steps are insufficient, targeted pesticide applications are appropriate. But IPM avoids broadcast applications when targeted options are available.
4. Monitor and Verify — Effective pest management includes follow-up to confirm treatment worked and to catch new activity early.
Why IPM Produces Better Results
The “spray and come back monthly” approach addresses visible pests but not root causes. IPM produces more durable results because it changes the conditions that allowed pests to establish in the first place. For Bay Area homeowners — and for the environment — that matters.
ATCO has practiced IPM principles since our founding. It’s the foundation of our D.I.R.T. process and the reason our customers experience long-term results rather than endless repeat treatments. Contact us to learn more.
