As spider activity increases during the cooler months, many Bay Area homeowners begin noticing spiders indoors and ask the same question: “Is this a black widow?” Here’s how to accurately identify what you’re seeing — and what steps actually help reduce spider activity.
How to Identify a Black Widow Spider
Black widow spiders (Latrodectus hesperus) are one of the few spiders in California considered medically significant. The spider most people worry about is the adult female black widow. She is glossy black with a distinctive red or orange hourglass marking on the underside of her abdomen. Female black widows build irregular, tangled webs close to the ground in dark, undisturbed areas — garages, under decks, wood piles, and storage areas.
Male black widows do not pose a hazard to humans. They are much smaller, usually brown or gray with lighter markings, and are often mistaken for other harmless species.
Common Spiders Mistaken for Black Widows
False black widow (Steatoda grossa) — Dark brown to black, round abdomen, no hourglass marking. Very common in Bay Area garages and crawlspaces. Not medically significant.
Western black widow juveniles — Young black widows are tan, orange, and white. They look nothing like the adult female and are commonly misidentified as dangerous.
House spiders — Tan or brown with mottled markings. Build messy webs in corners. Not medically significant.
What Actually Reduces Spider Activity Indoors
Spiders come inside following their prey — primarily other insects. Reducing insect activity in and around your home is the most effective long-term strategy.
- Seal gaps around doors, windows, and utility entry points
- Reduce outdoor lighting that attracts flying insects
- Remove clutter and debris from garage and storage areas
- Sweep down existing webs regularly (this disrupts their habitat)
